One Baltimore football player has singlehandedly increased Domestic Violence (C.R.S. 18-6-800.3) reports throughout the United States by 84%!. I find that remarkable. According to a Huffington Post article, the video, released by TMZ, of a popular running back hitting his girlfriend has created so much public outrage that Domestic Violence reports have gone from 500 to 600 calls per day to over 1,000 phone calls a day. This results in a tremendous expenditure of government resources across the U.S. and in Denver, Jefferson and Douglas County.
Falsely Accused Hotline – 1-800-WASNT ME
How can this be? The CEO of a national Domestic Violence hotline believes the increase in reports is due to women suddenly realizing they are not alone. I suppose a Douglas County woman may be more inspired to call a hotline if she thinks she is not the only person being abused, but I wonder if there may be another factor driving these phenomena. Since the CEO of the Domestic violence hotline did not support her opinion for the increase, I would like to propose another theory. But first of all it is worth mentioning that I detest Domestic Violence. I can only think of one thing I dislike more. That is when a person in Denver, Arapahoe, or Adams County accuses someone of a crime in order to get attention, or to get even with someone else. This happens far more than most people know. I hate false allegations so much I think there should be a national hotline for the falsely accused.
Is it possible for the number of reported Domestic Violence cases to increase dramatically overnight because people think a false report is now somewhat more believable? In my experience it is just as likely as thinking that more reports are being made because someone feels they are not alone. Perhaps both are true, but we should never automatically believe an allegation before looking at all of the evidence.
